Nokia Lumia 800 Review

The Nokia Lumia 800 is the newest smartphone available by the Finish brand Nokia. The phone came out just 6 months after the contract signing of Nokia and Microsoft. It is the first ever product in collaboration between Microsoft and Nokia. The phone is not very distinctive from other Windows phones; however, it is pretty different from other Nokia smartphones which are currently available.

Nokia Lumia 800 Review

Design

The features are similar to most of the Windows smartphones and the additional amount which is charged in the price is solely for the beautiful design of the product. It has a very sleek design and has curves on both the sides. It is flat from the top and the bottom and is relatively thin while being rock solid. The design is similar to the Nokia N9 smartphone and this particular phone uses a polycarbonate material for its design. This is why there are several attractive colors available in the Lumia including blue, red and black. The smartphone only has 3 buttons including a volume controller, a camera launcher and a button to lock the screen.

Display

The smartphone has an AMOLED touch screen and it supports 16 million colors. It features a gorilla class display which is used by most high quality touch screen phones and this offers clarity at its resolution which is 480 to 800. The size of the screen is relatively smaller as compared to other brands such as HTC and Apple, however, the smartphone has a 3.7 inches screen which is pretty decent for using the phone.

Software and Hardware

Nokia Lumia 800 runs on Windows 7.5 Mango OS which is the latest available version for Mobile Windows. This is the first Nokia product to feature a windows operating system.  Nokia did some major changes in the hardware in order to compete with other top touch screen smartphones and the phone comes with a powerful and blazing fast scorpion processor featuring a 1.4 Gigahertz processor. There is also a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset implemented in this particular smartphone in order to make the phone smoother and better with multitasking. Nokia has laid focus on multitasking since the arrival of the N900 with the N9 featuring even smoother multitasking. The Nokia Lumia 800 is designed to offer an even better and faster multitasking experience. The major drawback of the smartphone is the 512 Mb of RAM with other competitors already offering at least 1Gb of RAM for a faster performance.

Camera

Camera of Nokia Lumia 800 is similar to the upcoming smartphones and it is an 8 megapixel camera featuring Carl Zeiss lens. It also features a dual LED and an autofocus option. The video recording can be done at 720p; however, 1080p is used in the upcoming smartphones such as the HTC sensation XE. Also, there is no secondary front camera and therefore, video calling may not be a feature of this phone.

Other functions are similar to previous Nokia products such as Wifi and Bluetooth. The battery is a 1450mah battery which claims to provide over 12 hours of talk time with over 250 hours of standby time.

I don’t like Windows Phone 7 OS. I prefer Maemo (N900) or MeeGo(N9) over WP7 any day. Maemo and MeeGo had great potential but Nokia killed them.

I don’t find WP7 that attractive. There are so many restrictions in WP7. Metro UI is not that impressive. If you want to have true multitasking the use Maemo or MeeGo.

It looks like a good phone, although I’ll be sticking to my Samsung for a few months yet.

I’ll seriously consider Nokia when I decide to upgrade though.

I personally think that Nokia Lumia 800 is one of the best smartphones that Nokia has ever manufactured. The OS is quite amazing since it’s owned by Microsoft. I heard that there are approximately 40,000 applications in this OS.

One of the best smartphone indeed but if compared to other brand for me it is somewhat inferior. I’d rather buy an adroid or IOS phone than this.

While similar in many aspects to N8, Lumia 800 does give the user a more robust body and OS. Thanks for the in-depth review Crystal.
