Nowadays video games are pretty expensive, at a point where you might have to break your budget just to buy one game that you will finish in about 20hours. I remember when I was young, video games costed a lot but nothing compared to today. That might be why free video games are rising in popularity. Another reason might be because free video games are becoming quite good, they offer great content and playability to us gamers.

In fact, two of the most popular Esports game are free, League of Legends & DOTA 2. I know you can spend money in the game to buy cosmetics and such, but to play the game, you do not have to spend a dime. Steam offers a great feature. You can check out the stats of the top 100 games on Steam. It can give you a good idea how many people play free/paid games.

In this article, I picked my top 3 free games on Steam.

1. Dota 2

Our first one is Dota 2. I had no choice. It is the number one free game on steam right now.  For the individuals who are wondering what is Dota 2? Dota 2 is a free to play MOBA game. MOBA game is Multiplayer online battle arena where you control a single character in one of a two-team battle. Your goal is to destroy the primary enemy structure while fighting computer-controlled units and other players, all that using unique abilities & mechanics from different playable characters.

What I like about this game is the champion pool, you can pick between hundreds of different characters, with different game mechanics and abilities. You can even play with friends has both teams consist of five different players, it might be hard to communicate with five people but believe me you will have fun. Played by both casual and professional players, Dota 2 is perfect for any gamers.

2. Team Fortress 2

The second one on our list is the excellent Team Fortress 2 game. TF2  was released in October 2007. You read that right. This game is ten years old, feel old yet? Despite that, this is one of the top free games on Steam, if you click the link above about the stats of the games on Steam you will see that TF2 is in the top 10 of the games with most players. You might be wondering why this ten years old first person shooter is still very popular, well let me tell you why.

Team Fortress 2 is an FPS multiplayer game, where the player can pick between nine different character class, battling in a variety of game modes including capture the flag and king of the hill. The gameplay, the humor, and the constant updates are what makes this game amazing.  The update consists of new maps, new weapons, new content and much more. My favorite features are the mods; you can add mods to the game to enhance your gameplay to an even further level.

3. Path of Exile

This one is one of my favorite games on Steam, I’ve played for several seasons. This fantastic Hack & Slash RPG is what Diablo 3 should have been, in my opinion. You are an exile trying to survive in a cruel world. In this game the player controls a single character from an overhead perspective and explores large outdoor areas and underground caves or dungeons, killing monsters and completing quests to gain experience and powerful items & skills.

You can choose between seven different class. Each class uses one or two of the three primary attributes ( STR, DEX, INT ). That does not stop you from building a particular class in a whole new direction, the character customization in this game is incredible, that is why it’s one of my favorite games. You can play solo, or with friends, you can play in softcore mode or try the hardcore mode, but I’d recommend going softcore if you’ve never played. This game is regularly updated by the dev, plus they create “leagues” multiple times a year. Leagues are like the normal mode but with some interesting in-game twist. PoE offers a multitude of micro-transaction, but do not worry this is not a pay to win game.

Conclusion

Overall, free to play games are often a hit or miss, in my days most of the free games were not very good, but today it’s a whole new, different era. As you may have seen above, I’ve only listed three of the hundred of awesome free games you can find on Steam. You might need to dig out and test out different games, but I can assure you, you will find one that will enjoy.
