Announcing the New Twitter Amazon Cart Feature

The new Twitter Amazon Cart feature, announced on YouTube no less, looks to bring the biggest name in micro-blogging together with the biggest name in online sales.

Users can expect to have an easier time making purchases when they see something interesting in their Twitter feed. Business have a real opportunity to monetize their Twitter accounts.

How do you connect tweets with your Amazon Cart?

The way that you connect a tweet with your Amazon account is by adding the famous Twitter hashtag to a tweet which contains an Amazon product link within a reply. For those in the USA, this hashtag is #AmazonCart. For UK users the hashtag is #AmazonBasket.

The entire point of the new Twitter Amazon Cart feature is to allow Twitter users to mark products which they want to buy. Once they add one of these hashtags to a tweet it adds them to their Amazon account where they can log in later on and buy it.

How will consumers use the Twitter Amazon Cart feature?

To map out a basic sales funnel from tweet, to Amazon, to purchase:

  1. A Twitter users connects their Amazon account with their Twitter account.
  2. A company sends out a tweet which contains an Amazon product link in it.
  3. A Twitter see this and recognizes a product which they want to purchase.
  4. The Twitter user replies to the tweet with the #AmazonCart hashtag in it.
  5. The user then goes to Amazon later on and sees the product from Twitter in their shopping cart.
  6. The user then decides whether or not to follow through on the purchase.

For consumers, you have to connect your Twitter account to your Amazon account. To do this, you’ll need to go into your social settings, and click on the ‘Connect’ button. You will be guided the rest of the way.

There is an opt out option for those who do not want to connect these accounts. Maybe you have a shopping habit that’s already out of control!

Another consideration for consumers when using Amazon Cart on Twitter is that the products which you purchase are displayed on your timeline, while also being a visible reply below the original tweet. This could be an issue for those looking to make more intimate or personal purchases.

The opportunity for online companies using the Twitter Amazon Cart feature

This is your chance to make your tweets really pay off. For anyone who sells anything on Amazon, rather than through their own portal, this is a complete no brainer. The standard social media marketing rules apply, but this is a whole new level of social media becoming a true marketing and sales platform.

To temper expectations, you may not make a sale every time you see an #AmazonCart tag in a reply. But what you are doing is getting your products most of the way there – into their shopping cart. This makes it much more likely that they’ll proceed with the checkout.

I’m glad to see that you found it useful. It’s a pretty useful feature for anyone who uses both Twitter and Amazon, and who shop online. I’m going to bet that number is pretty decent.
