In the first quarter of 2020, buyers of Android smartphones relied on Samsung and Xiaomi – mainly on their inexpensive models.
The best-selling smartphone in the first quarter of 2020 is Samsung’s mid-range Galaxy A51. It is followed by another rather inexpensive smartphone, Xiaomi’s Redmi 8. This was determined by the market research company Strategy Analytics.
Also in the other top 6 places are only models from Samsung and Xiaomi. The Galaxy S20 + is in third place, followed by the Galaxy A10s. Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 8 came in fifth, followed by another Samsung smartphone, the Galaxy A20s.
It is striking that the devices are, apart from the Galaxy S20 +, entry-level and mid-range devices. Strategy Analytics gives several reasons why buyers are currently opting for cheaper models.
Corona virus has an impact on buying behavior
On the one hand, mobile operators worldwide have reduced the subsidies for contracts that have been concluded, which has made the purchase of a top smartphone more expensive. In addition, many countries are currently heading for a recession caused by the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus, making consumers more price-conscious.
Another reason is likely to be the fact that, particularly in the mid-range range of Android smartphones, hardware has been greatly upgraded in recent years. For less than 300 euros, buyers can get powerful devices with multiple camera systems and current Android versions, which should be sufficient for the majority of users in everyday life.
A look at the market shares of the six top devices shows how diversified the Android market is: Together they reach a share of just 10.5 percent. The Galaxy A51 at the top comes to 2.3 percent.
