YouTube Sets A New Record for Deletion

In the second quarter of 2020, Youtube deleted over 2 million more videos than in the same period last year.

Youtube deleted more videos than ever before in the past quarter. In the period from April to June 2020, the number of videos removed was 11.4 million and exceeded the threshold of 10 million for the first time – more than ever before.

That emerges from the company’s transparency report, which was published on August 26, 2020. In the same period a year ago, the number of videos that were deleted due to a violation of the YouTube community guidelines was just under nine million worldwide.

In 3.8 million cases (33.5 percent), child protection violations were the reason for deletion. 3.2 million videos (28.3 percent) were identified as unsolicited advertising (spam) or as fraudulent or misleading content. In 1.7 million videos (14.6 percent), YouTube complained about illegal nudity or sexual content. Hateful content or insults resulted in 80,033 cases (0.7 percent) being deleted.

When detecting and removing prohibited content, Google employees receive support from a computer program. 95 percent of the videos that YouTube removed in the past quarter were identified by the algorithm and only then checked by employees, the blog entry said. 42 percent of the machine-recognized videos could therefore be deleted before they were viewed even once. 33.7 percent were only called up to ten times.
Most of the deleted content is from the United States

Most of the videos that YouTube deleted for violating the guidelines came from users in the US (1.02 million), followed by India (827,000) and Brazil (485,000). Germany is in 14th place with around 106,000 deletions.

he statistics on the deletion of videos are regularly presented by YouTube . The Google video platform and other online companies are repeatedly accused of not removing extremist content quickly enough.
