The Rising Popularity of BYOD

As smartphones, tablets and other portable devices continue to grow in popularity, more and more people are choosing to use their personal devices to access their work network for email or other work-based files. In a recent survey, 65% of employees admitted that their smartphone was their most relied upon device. 89% of employees said that they used their mobile device to access the corporate network.

But what about the security of the device and the data accessed on personal devices? If the device was stolen, for example, how easily would the security of corporate data be compromised?

In most cases, the accessing of company data from a stolen device would be pretty easy. With this revelation, more companies have been forced into reconsidering the BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) initiative and the security measures in place to keep sensitive data private and secure.

In addition to being secure, companies need to enable corporate networks to be accessible from a range of different devices and operating systems. Last year, the iPhone were more commonly used for workplace BYOD than Android devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy S4.

Despite BYOD being commonplace in most companies, almost 80% are still going unmanaged with many companies not having effective security methods in place.
