About Tech Crates

Tech Crates is an independent technology blog, online since December 2010. We publish practical guides for everyday tech (Windows PCs, smartphones, internet and Wi-Fi, security and backups) as well as news and background articles on AI, cloud computing and the chip industry.

Who runs Tech Crates

Tech Crates is run by Carsten Kraft, an IT consultant and software developer from Germany with more than 25 years of experience building enterprise software. He specialises in public key infrastructure (PKI) and certificate lifecycle management: since 2019 he has worked as a developer and consultant on an enterprise PKI platform used by large companies and government agencies. He also works with local AI and large language models. More about him on carsten-kraft.com and LinkedIn. He also runs the student blog Student Life Online and the German tech blog techuni.de.

Who writes the articles

Articles published under the name “Tech Crates” come from our editorial team. Over the years many guest authors have contributed too; their name and a short bio appear below each of their articles.

How we write, check and update articles

  • Guides explain one task or problem step by step. Where it helps, we link to official sources such as the Microsoft, Google and Apple help pages, so you can check the current steps for your device.
  • AI tools. Some news and background articles are drafted with the help of AI writing tools and then edited. AI can get details wrong, so published articles are reviewed against the original sources; mistakes are corrected, and articles that cannot be fixed are taken down.
  • Older articles. Technology changes quickly. Older articles show the year they were first published at the top. In October 2026 we reviewed the whole archive: around 80 popular guides were rewritten and updated, outdated news and product reviews were removed from search results or taken offline, and dead links were removed.
  • Guest articles are reviewed and edited before they are published. We do not accept articles written mainly to place links; external links in guest articles are marked “nofollow”. See Write for Tech Crates.
  • Advertising. Tech Crates is financed by ads from Google AdSense. Ads appear in separate ad slots, and advertisers have no influence on what we write.
