Update 2026: CommentLuv is no longer available. WordPress.org closed the plugin on 7 March 2024 because of a security issue, and it can no longer be downloaded. If it is still installed on your site, deactivate and delete it. To find and fix broken links today, use a maintained tool such as the Broken Link Checker plugin, an external site crawler or the reports in Google Search Console. The original guide below is kept for reference.
Ageing blogs all face the same problem: links in old posts and comments break over time and lead visitors to 404 “Not Found” pages. Many dead links pointing from your blog to external pages are also a poor quality signal for search engines, so they should be cleaned up regularly. This guide looked at how to clean up the broken links that the CommentLuv plugin added to comments.
What was CommentLuv?
CommentLuv was a WordPress plugin known for its community-building features. The idea of the plugin and its developer Andy Bailey was to encourage readers to comment on blog posts by rewarding them with a link: when someone left a comment, they could choose to include a link to their own latest blog post.
Benefits of CommentLuv
Configured properly, CommentLuv could bring extra traffic to commenters’ new posts, while the blog owner gained an active community. Many topic-related comments below each post are a good sign of an engaged readership, and combining comments with social media sharing could strengthen this effect.
The commenter’s latest post link attached to a comment:
The problem with broken links
Blog owners are responsible for their content and for the links that point from it to external pages. Google asks site owners to mark links they don’t vouch for — such as links in comments — with rel="nofollow" or rel="ugc". The older a link is, the more likely the linked page has moved or disappeared. After reactivating CommentLuv on Tech Crates, our broken link checker reported many dead comment links that were either redirected to other pages or returned 404 errors.
The CommentLuv Link Cleaner
While looking for a fix, we found that Andy Bailey had written a companion plugin for this problem. The CommentLuv Link Cleaner searched all links added by CommentLuv to your WordPress comments and listed them.
Links could be checked on the fly and shown in configurable pages (for example 500 links per page). An automatic mode checked all links periodically, which made it easy to clean up dead links that were years old.
Removing dead links
Dead links were marked with a clearly visible red 404 label and could be removed directly from the result list — much easier than checking thousands of comment links by hand.
Broken links are a normal part of the web, and no link works forever, so checking for them should be part of every blog’s regular maintenance. Comments matter too: they show reader feedback and should stay related to the post topic. Comment and link spam should always be removed as soon as you notice it to protect your site’s reputation.

Hi!
I appreciate your suggestion about cleaning up dead links.
Does this also apply if I’m the person who’s trying to receive links? Here’s the message the blog owner shared with me after trying to send me a nofollow link, “Sorry, no posts were in the feed that was returned when I asked for them. The feed url used was
earnloyalcustomers.com/sample-page/feed/”

Great post!
A question if I may?
I’ve just started using the “commentluv” plugin and noticed that their website is down.
Do you think this plugin will be cancelled in the near future?
Keep up the good work;-)

Thank You for sharing a nice article. After more than a decade as a strategic SEO tent pole, link building has become a divisive topic in the SEO community. Some, as a reaction to Google’s Penguin update and John Mueller’s dissuasive comments on link building in general, have taken the position that link building is “dead,” or that it should be entirely avoided. Others, like myself, believe that link building isn’t just effective—it’s absolutely necessary if you want to build a successful SEO campaign. The challenge is to build links properly
