8 Ways to Improve Your Internet Connection Speed

This article was published in 2011 and updated in October 2026.

Slow internet is frustrating, but the cause is often closer to home than you think. Before you call your provider or pay for a faster plan, try these practical ways to improve your internet connection — most of them take only a few minutes and cost nothing.

internet connection

1. Measure first

Run a speed test (for example on your provider’s website, fast.com or speedtest.net) once over Wi-Fi and once with a computer connected to the router by cable. If the cable result matches the speed you pay for but Wi-Fi is slow, the problem is your home network. If both are slow, the problem may be your line or your provider.

2. Restart and update your router

Routers run for months without a break, and a simple restart often fixes slowdowns. While you’re at it, check the router’s settings page or app for firmware updates — they fix bugs, improve performance and close security holes.

3. Improve your Wi-Fi

  • Placement: put the router in a central, raised and open spot, away from thick walls, metal furniture, microwaves and fish tanks.
  • Use the faster band: 5 GHz (and 6 GHz on newer routers) is much faster than 2.4 GHz at short range. Many routers can steer devices to the best band automatically.
  • Cover large homes with mesh: a mesh Wi-Fi system or a well-placed access point removes dead zones far better than a cheap range extender.
  • Upgrade old hardware: a router from the Wi-Fi 4 or 5 era may be holding back newer devices. See Wi-Fi 6, 6E and 7 explained to find out which standard you actually need.

4. Use a cable where it matters

For gaming PCs, smart TVs, game consoles and home offices, an Ethernet cable is still faster and more stable than Wi-Fi. If running a cable isn’t possible, powerline adapters can be a good alternative.

5. Find what is using your bandwidth

Large internet connection users are often running in the background: system and game updates, cloud backups and photo syncing, 4K streaming on another TV or torrent clients. Check your router’s device list and pause or schedule big downloads for the night. Many routers also offer Quality of Service (QoS) settings that give priority to video calls or gaming.

6. Keep your devices healthy

Malware can use your connection to send spam or join attacks without you noticing, so keep your operating system and browser updated and use security software such as the built-in Microsoft Defender. Too many browser extensions can also slow down browsing, so remove those you don’t use.

7. Consider peak times

In the evening, when everyone in the neighbourhood is streaming, shared connections such as cable internet can slow down. If speeds drop sharply every evening, note the times and results of your speed tests — that evidence helps when you contact your provider.

8. Talk to your provider

If your wired speed is consistently well below what you pay for, contact your provider. They can check your line, replace an outdated modem or suggest a better plan. If fibre is available at your address, it is usually the biggest upgrade you can make.

I’ve found the first point to be true. I try to avoid using the internet at peak-times so I’d rather watch a good television show or catch up on work. I’ll log on later and the speed is much faster which makes me happy and less annoyed

I think most Internet connections these days come with fair usage policies so if you are into downloading a lot your Internet speed will suffer, having said that browsing at the right time certainly helps to improve performance.

Thanks for this nice article which really helped me out. I found out that it wasn’t my website performing slowly or the server. It was indeed a connection at my house. Because I read this, I started looking and found the problem at the router. My site speed doubled. Thanks a lot.

Also, if you have a Home Wifi Network make sure that you have set up your security password so unauthorized person won’t be able to connect to your network thus avoiding low speed internet connection.
