Android 4.4 KitKat – Chocolate Droid

Google’s names for Android follow in alphabetical order of dessert names through their version numbers. These are, starting with Cupcake, Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean in latest version 4.3. Now, Google announded its latest tech candy, which was nick-named from Android mobile operating systems for smart phones and tablets after desserts, has chosen a brand-name candy for ANDROID version 4.4 as “Kit Kat“,  the chocolate candy bar with the well-known “Gimme a Break” jingle.

Jelly Bean is history, here comes Kit-Kat

Kit Kat packaging will show Android’s green robot mascot breaking a Kit Kat bar. Financial terms weren’t disclosed for the sweet deal between Google and Hershey Co., which created and produces Kit Kat candy. But the deal shows that naming a stadium or sponsoring a TV show can be seen as old school. The latest marketing craze may be to slap, a brand name on a tech product.

Google approached Hershey- the chocolate world, about several months ago for the discussion and granting permission to use the name. The vice president of U.S. chocolate at Hershey, Jennifer Podhajsky, licenses the Kit Kat brand in the U.S., while Nestle owns the worldwide brand. Google has worked with the makers of chocolate and crunchy candy bar i.e. NESTLE and HARSHEY. Now NESTLE will make Kit-Kat bars based on android theme. The website has already been made to promote this.

Rumors about the Name “Key Lime Pie”

For several months from now, Android users have been meditating on the name and at one point they even “confirmed”, that the next Android version would be code named “Key Lime Pie“. The Mountain View company made an indirect reference to the rumors by sharing a video presentation of a little Android eating some key lime pie.

On September 3rd, nearly four months later, Google finally declared that their next release will not be code named after the tangy pie, but will be code named after the chocolate candy bar – KITKAT. The rumors regarding the new version number as well as the new version name were in correct instead of android version number 5.0, android release will be “Android 4.4”, and instead of version name key lime pie, it will be “Kit-Kat”.

The Android 4.4 Kit Kat system is expected to launch in October

The new official website for the next version of Android has been launched by Google. In MOUNT VIEW CALIF, google has also made a Kit-Kat  statue in the shape of android robot. And more than 50 million specially branded chocolate bars will be available in market. Kit Kat, the candy bar, is sponsoring a giveaway. When  the customers will  buy an Android-branded candy bar, they’ll enter to win a new Nexus 7 or Google Play credit. I think this is the most  interesting and unique way of open source software and corporate sponsorship ever done.

We love Android and the green (soon chocoloate) droids. Also customization projects like CyanogenMOD, Paranoid, Carbon Android and other ROM projects like SlimBean will include the best features of KitKat Android 4.4 into their custom ROMs. We will update you soon on further developments.
