Job Hunting Tips Using Your iPhone

This article was published in 2011 and updated in October 2026.

Job hunting no longer means newspaper ads and printed CVs. With your iPhone (or any smartphone) you can find openings, apply, prepare for interviews and even attend them — from wherever you are. Most of the apps we recommended in 2011 no longer exist, so here are updated job hunting tips for your phone.

job hunting tips

1. Use the big job apps — and set up alerts

Install the apps of the major job platforms, such as LinkedIn and Indeed, plus any job boards that are popular in your country or industry. Save your searches by job title, location and salary range and turn on notifications, so you can apply quickly when a new opening appears — early applicants often have an advantage. Many apps also let you search by commuting distance or filter for remote and hybrid jobs.

2. Keep your LinkedIn profile up to date

Recruiters search LinkedIn every day. Use the app to keep your profile current: a professional photo, a clear headline, your recent experience and skills. You can signal to recruiters that you’re open to work, follow companies you’re interested in and message contacts who work there.

3. Check company career pages and reviews

Many employers post jobs first on their own websites. Bookmark the career pages of companies you’d like to work for, and read employee reviews and salary information on sites such as Glassdoor or Kununu before you apply.

4. Have your CV ready on your phone

Keep an up-to-date CV as a PDF in iCloud Drive, Google Drive or the Files app, so you can attach it to applications instantly. You can edit it in Pages, Word or Google Docs on the iPhone, but a final check on a larger screen is worth it. Tailor your CV and cover letter to each job — and if you use AI tools to help with wording, always review and personalise the result.

5. Organise your applications and interviews

Use the Calendar app for interview dates and reminders, and a simple list in Notes, Reminders or a spreadsheet to track where you’ve applied, when and what happens next. Following up a week or two after applying shows interest.

6. Prepare for video interviews

Many first interviews now take place on Zoom, Microsoft Teams or Google Meet, or as recorded video interviews. Install the app in advance, test your camera and microphone, use a stable phone stand at eye level, find a quiet place with good light and silence notifications. Practise answers to common interview questions out loud — recording yourself with the camera helps.

7. Watch out for job scams

Be careful with offers that sound too good to be true, recruiters who contact you only via messaging apps, or “employers” who ask for money, bank details or ID documents before a real interview. Legitimate companies never charge you for a job.

With your phone, job hunting can happen anytime and anywhere. Good luck finding your dream job!
